Twenty-four years as a business owner, community volunteer, and industry expert in the field of sleep diagnostics and allied health, Lea Desmarteau’s career has been dedicated to improving the lives of others. She has been committed to her patients, her employees, and her community as she built a successful business here in Louisiana and in the Texas area.
Lea started the business that would become WellNecessities, Inc. in 1992 after recognizing a need for a diagnostic sleep study facility in Shreveport. Today, WellNecessities is a clinically based wellness company, which offers innovative products, education, and services in a dignified and modern environment designed to support a healthy lifestyle. The hallmarks of the company are sleep and neuro diagnostic testing, and home medical equipment rental and sales, of equal importance, WellNecessities is a revenue generator and provides fulltime employment for over 70 employees – most of them in the Louisiana area. Providing quality jobs and an exceptional work environment has been a goal and source of pride for Lea since starting her business.
Forging relationships with medical professionals, business leaders, and regulatory agencies throughout her career has provided the platform for Lea’s success. She understands the value of relationships and how to work with diverse groups to get things done. She has worked tirelessly with the Louisiana Governors’ Board of Polysomnography since 2006 to have sleep diagnostics designated as an Allied Health offering. The resulting care requirements and standards she helped write have meant that these valuable diagnostic tools and resulting treatments are now available to thousands of Louisiana residents. Additionally, Lea’s work ethic, dedication to excellence, and strong belief in what she does have created a unified network of professionals throughout the local and regional healthcare community committed to improving testing and treatment options.
Recognized as an expert and pioneer in Sleep Technology, Lea has been a registered Polysomnographic Technologist since 1986 – one of the first in the country. She studied Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic and served as the Clinical Director of the sleep lab at Willis-Knighton Medical Center from 1991 to 1993. She holds a B.S. in Biology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas and is often a national and international speaker on sleep disorders.
Community involvement and activism are important to Lea. Currently is one of the nine board members of the Metropolitan Planning Commission of Shreveport and was elected Chairwomen in 2014 and again in 2015. Shreveport Chamber’s Small Minority Business Owner of year 2017, Shreveport’s 2014 Athena Award Winner, and past Secretary/Treasurer for the Shreveport/Bossier City Committee of 100 Executive Board. Completed Leadership Shreveport in 2001, and is a past board member of Samaritan Counseling Services, and maintains an active membership at Kings Highway Christian Church.
While investing in both her career and her community, Lea has no greater passion or focus than family. Her children, Corbin and Chloe, are her greatest treasures. “They’re so much fun and my pride and joy. Taking her own advice to heart, Lea maintains a healthy lifestyle and balances the demands of her busy life. She attended college on a basketball scholarship and still today enjoys playing sports, entertaining, traveling, cooking, and photography.
